Menopause to be Included in NHS Over-40 Health Check

Menopause Mandate is celebrating a major victory for women’s health today, as Health Secretary Wes Streeting announces that menopause will be added to the NHS Over-40 Health Check — a direct result of the campaign group’s MM40+ campaign.

For two years, Menopause Mandate has been calling for this simple, preventative step to help millions of women recognise symptoms earlier, access appropriate care, and make informed choices about their health.

The NHS Health Check is offered every five years to adults aged 40–74 in England, and currently screens for cardiovascular risk factors and lifestyle issues. Soon, menopause will be included as a standard topic, with dedicated questions and advice to be introduced over the coming months.

This follows the findings of Menopause Mandate’s 2025 Mega Survey, which gathered responses from more than 15,000 women, and confirmed its previous yearly findings.

An overwhelming 99% of respondents said menopause should be included in the 40+ check, as only 14% said they had learnt about menopause from a healthcare professional, underscoring the urgent need for better education and early intervention.

Mariella Frostrup, Chair of Menopause Mandate, said:

“This is a landmark moment for women’s health.

We are absolutely delighted that the Government has listened to women and acted. Including menopause in the NHS 40+ Health Check is a simple, practical, and preventative step that will transform how millions of women experience this stage of life.  We are grateful to Wes Streeting for listening and taking action.

It means women can have earlier, better-informed conversations about symptoms and treatment, while helping the NHS reduce unnecessary investigations and costs.

It’s another major victory for Menopause Mandate’s campaigning, following the introduction of the HRT pre-payment certificate, and another step towards bringing menopause and women’s health out of the shadows and into mainstream healthcare.”

Carolyn Harris MP, Patron of Menopause Mandate, and campaigner for menopause awareness said:

“I am absolutely thrilled that the Secretary of State has made this announcement today.   The Menopause APPG and Menopause Mandate first started campaigning for menopause to be included in the 40 plus NHS health check more than two years ago, under the previous Government.

Earlier awareness will enable millions of women to identify their symptoms and seek the support they need.  This is a huge step forward in breaking down the barriers that have impacted women’s menopause experiences for generations.

It will help women to take control of their own health and wellbeing and that will be life-changing. Enabling them to access the treatment they need, to thrive in the workplace and to be the very best version of themselves in perimenopause, in menopause and beyond.”

We are not willing to wait any longer for change

Women need to be supported right now. Not after a consultation period, not after proposals have been kicked around for a year or more, not as a tick in the box and a pat on the head, and definitely not when a male-dominated government decides they might do something.

We are working for a change NOW.

It’s beyond a joke.
